Description
SOMALIA: GETTING IT WRONG AGAIN
Tuesday 30th January, 7 pm
Khalili Lecture Theatre, SOAS, Russell Square
Speakers: Harun Hassan (Freelance journalist)
David Stephen (Former Special Rep to the UN Secretary General, Somalia)
Chair: Richard Dowden (Director, Royal African Society)
On Christmas Eve Ethiopian tanks rolled across Somalia, driving out the militias of the Union of Islamic Courts and imposing the Transitional Federal Government on the country. At the same time, in pursuit of alleged Al Q'aeda activists, American planes bombed Somali villages. Is the Union of Islamic Courts still a force to be reckoned with? Will the first internationally recognised government since 1991 be able to establish peace and stability in Somalia, or will the new government allow the warlords to return? And will an African peacekeeping force be ready in time to replace the Ethiopians?
