The Africa APPG![]() The Africa APPG was launched by Hugh Bayley MP and Lord Lea of Crondall on January 20th 2003 as an umbrella group to focus on issues which affect the whole of Africa as a continent.
It was agreed to establish an African All Party Parliamentary Group with the following objective - "to promote Africa, in particular the issues relating to NEPAD, as a foreign policy priority in Parliament."
The Group has been at the centre of the increased interest in Africa in Westminster and Whitehall, in the last four years. DFID's Aid Priorities and Africa - a new report by the Africa APPG The Africa All Party Parliamentary Group has questionioned the Government’s selection of countries to receive aid, in a report entitled DFID’s Aid Priorities and Africa. The report analyses the Government’s Bilateral Aid Review (BAR) published in 2011, which led the Department for International Development (DFID) to reduce the number of countries it operates in from 43 in 2008/9 to 27 by 2016. The cross party group concludes that the premise that DFID should operate more effectively in fewer countries is sensible, but the lack of objective criteria, the poor quality of some of the information used to select focus countries, and the lack of transparency of the process, mean the countries selected to receive aid are not the optimum choices. The report also discusses the implications of the BAR for how UK aid should be spent in Africa. To date, the Group has published six other reports Security and Africa - a submission to the Strategic Defence and Security review - August 2010 Land in Zimbabwe. Past mistakes, future prospects - December 2009 Strengthening Parliaments in Africa: Improving Support – March 2008 The Other Side of the Coin: The UK and Corruption in Africa – March 2006 The UK Government and Africa in 2005: How joined up is Whitehall? – March 2005 Averting Catastrophe: AIDS in 21st Century Africa – June 2004
The Africa APPG has recently produced a submission to the Strategic Defence and Security Review.
