President of Sudan and head of the National Congress Party. Came to power in 1989 through coup that ousted former Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi. Became instrumental figure in establishing an Islamic legal code on a National level with Hasan al-Turabi, the leader of the National Islamic Front. Indicted in 2008 by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes associated with the operations of government and associated forces in Darfur. Re-elected as President of Sudan in 2010 prior to referendum in South Sudan on independence. |
