MELTING the ICE African Perspectives on Climate Change Wednesday 7th November 10:00 – 4pm Khalili Lecture Theatre, SOAS No-one can predict the consequences of climate change with complete certainty, but it is accepted by many that climate change presents serious global risks. Africa is faced both with tremendous threats and great opportunities. It is set to be damaged the most, and yet has probably benefited the least from the causes of climate change. But it also has the opportunity to develop and adopt new, appropriate and sustainable technologies. Yet African voices – ranging from sceptical to the passionately converted - are largely absent from the international debate on climate change. This symposium brings together a cross-disciplinary group to give voice to this range of perspectives, and to discuss how artists, technologists and scientists can lead African responses to climate change. Contributions from Baaba Maal (singer); Dr Camilla Toulmin (IIED); Elsie Owusu (architect); Diran Adebayo (writer); Giles Foden (writer); HE Annan Cato (Ghana High Commissioner); Heather Ackroyd (artist); Jessica Antwi-Boasiako (filmmaker); Lord Hunt of Chesterton (UCL); Robert Taylor (photographer); Romuald Hazoumé (artist); Ali Mohammed (NEPAD); National Theatre of Ghana; Sunand Prasad (President, RIBA); Yinka Shonibare MBE (Turner Prize nominee) Chaired by Margaret Busby OBE (publisher and playwright) RSVP
