Since the end of Apartheid in 1994, South Africa and its ruling ANC party, have maintained a stable economic growth and achieved political stability, reflected by the hosting of the FIFA World Cup in 2010. Race relations however remain high on the agenda with the rich/poor divide still roughly mirroring the historic division between Blacks and Whites. Although fifty percent of the population still live under the poverty line, South Africa is hailed as one of Africa’s most functional nation states and has a large middle class population comprised by both blacks and whites. A dramatic recent political history saw Thabo MbekiNelson Mandela’s protégé in government – forced out from the presidency and leadership of the ANC by his controversial and more rough-hewn rival, Jacob Zuma.

South Africa has nine official languages, the most widely spoken being English, Afrikaans, Xhosa, Zulu and Tswana, reflecting a diversity of ethnic population and famously liberal post-apartheid constitution which sought to incorporate all people irrespective of race within the ‘rainbow nation.’

South Africa is a popular tourist destination, with Cape Town and the Garden Route, running along the South-Eastern coast, attracting an annual onslaught of European and Antipodean backpackers. It is also renowned for its wildlife and National Parks, the Kruger National Park being the largest and most iconic. Safari comprises a substantial sector of South Africa’s tourist industry.

National icons include anti-Apartheid fighter and first President of post-Apartheid South Africa, Nelson Mandela, Chaka Zulu, who united the Northern Nguni people of South Africa in the 1830s to establish the huge Zulu Empire, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
