The Africa Asia Centre

China’s expansion into Africa is the most important development in Africa’s foreign relations since the end of the Cold War. It leads a broader Asian engagement in the continent that will have immense, multiple and largely unpredicted impacts.

The Africa Asia Centre was established in 2007 to facilitate and develop interdisciplinary research, teaching, and other activities aimed at understanding this emerging, dynamic axis of engagement. The Centre is a collaboration between the Royal Africa Society and SOAS and is housed in the London International Development Centre.

The Africa Asia Centre studies the intensifying relations between Africa and Asia, with a particular interest in their impact on sustainable development. It seeks to engage with governments, pan-African institutions, academics, businesses, local, national and international civil society organisations, the media and others with a view to enhancing knowledge about the economic, social, environmental and political impacts of Africa-Asian relations.

The Centre draws on the expertise of SOAS and other British based institutions which already have well-established links with Asia or Africa. Britain’s historical connections with both continents and expertise on sustainable development and climate change make London a nexus of research, ideas and debate in these areas. However, a core part of the Centre’s mission is to establish triangular research links with partners in Africa and Asia and promote the flow and exchange of idea and knowledge.
